The purpose of this course is to teach students to read closely and to analyse texts with all the linguistic resources at their disposal. It is often thought that poetry is artificial and stylized and therefore of little interest at the linguistic level. One of the greatest of all linguists, Roman Jakobson (1896-1982), wrote an essay on the “Poetry of Grammar and Grammar of Poetry” (1962) and this chiasmus will be our guiding principle.
